Ruth married George Liversidge on 5 Jul 1836, but prior to the marriage she gave birth to Mary, giving her her father's surname as a middle name. It would appear, however, that George never formally adopted her, nor gave her his surname, since even as a 44 year old unmarried dairymaid, in 1881, she was still known as Mary BRIER, living with her brother Robert LIVERSIDGE. Mary in turn passed the LIVERSIDGE name on to her (illegitimate) son William, and he in turn named nearly all his children Liversidge.
