William Herbert BUTLER
William Herbert joined the Royal Berkshire Regiment, 1st Batallion, on
23 August 1911, when he was 16 years old. He gave his date of birth,
however, as 1893, thereby becoming 18! His regimental number was 9640.
On 25th March 1919, he transferred to the 51st Royal Warwickshire
Regiment Unit A Company, his regimental number was 55636. When he was
recalled during rioting in 1921/2/3, he was described as being a
'Gardener'. His Number was 5095805, and he went into the 31st Royal
Warwickshire Regiment, B Company.
According to his service book, he had the following ranks:
23 Aug 1911 to 4 April 1918 - Signaller (Private)
4 April 1918 to 15 Aug 1919 - Signalling Sergeant (1st RBR)
15 Aug 1919 to 15 Sept 1919 - Sergeant Signaller Instructor (51st RWR)
15 Sept 1919 to 16 Dec 1919 - CQMS (acting, 51st RWR)
16 Dec 1919 to 7 Dec 1923 - Signalling Sergeant

He had a TAB vaccine on 27 March 1919
According to the Regimental Register William joined the Royal Berks on
8/12/1911 and was transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as
55636 20/3/1919 - he would have acquired his Army number 5095805 in
1921 when regimental numbers were abolished.
When he joined he was posted to G Company 1st Bn and in the
intercompany rifle competition held July 17/18 at Lydd he was part of
the Young Soldiers team for G Company.
William was awarded the following medals:
