Who They Were
William's father, John, had a Watchmaking and Chronograph Manufacturing business at 53-54 Barbican in the City of London. This business seems to have passed to William by the time it is listed in the 1902 directory, when it had become William Bryer & Sons, Gold and Silver Refiners. Today, one of the blocks of flats in the Barbican Estate is named Bryer Court, after the company, and more information can be found on the Barbican Living website.
An example of one of William & Co's clocks came up for auction recently, and the online catalogue displayed this photograph.
By 1881, William had moved south of the river, to Beckenham in Kent, with his large family. At least three of his sons - John Henry, Harry Edward, and Albert Edward - worked with their father, as they are all listed in the 1908 Collingridge Directory. Charles Felix became an Insurance Clerk, and for a time lived away from home - he can be found living at a Club in Pancras in 1891 - although he had returned to the family home by 1901.
William's will, proven on 17 Mar 1914, named son Charles Felix and daughter Mary Maria as executors; William's estate was valued at £12,760 5s 5d, about £1.1 million today.
