Their Children
Who They Were
Elizabeth was the third child of John Bryer and his first wife Elizabeth Rowbotham. Joseph was well-known to the Bryer family long before he married Elizabeth, as John BRYER was a witness to Joseph's marriage to Mary WOODMAN on 15 May 1860 at St Giles Cripplegate.
This is my first researched instance of a divorce happening during Victorian times; it was rare to vanishing point among most of the people I have come across in my researches, and presumably was only possible in this case because of family wealth. Reading the document filed by Elizabeth against her husband of only a few months has been very interesting. Elizabeth filed for divorce on 10 Feb 1870, citing Joseph's continued and multiple adulteries with his sister in law, who continued to live with him after her sister Mary's death, and various farm servants. Before the case could be heard, Joseph died on 10 Apr 1870, and Elizabeth kept the surname Tavendale for the rest of her life, describing herself as a widow in subsequent census reports. She lived first with her aunt Mary Ann ROWBOTHAM and, after Mary Ann had died on 24 Dec 1891, with various paid companions.
