Who They Were

Japanner is a fairly unusual occupation, and I have so far come across only two BRYERs described as such, this William and a Henry. I suspect very strongly that they were brothers. William BRIER/BRYER was living at 18 Townsend Street, St George the Martyr Southwark in 1841, the house where Joseph Henry BRYER, the father of Henry, was to die 8 years later. William said he was born in county (in 1841) and his age (20) suggests he was born around 1821. I have not yet found him in the 1851 census, but I found a death in Stepney in 1854 for a William aged 40 which looks like him, in which case he was born in 1814, not 1821.

The William of 1841 was living with Eliza BRIER aged 20, possibly his wife. As shown on baby Thomas's birth certificate, William was married to Sarah Elizabeth SKINNER. I have traced 5 children to this couple, the last of which was born after his father's death. It is curious, also, that the father's occupation given on the birth certificate was Mariner. Perhaps, if he was away at sea, that is why I was unable to find him in 1851..

Where They Lived

William BRIER/BRYER was living at 18 Townsend Street, St George the Martyr Southwark in 1841, the house where Joseph Henry BRYER, the probably his father, was to die 8 years later. There is certainly a very strong probability that William is a member of this family.

In 1855, when Thomas was born, the family was living at 6 Hope Place Limehouse Stepney.
