Lion Street in the 1870s
Lion Street was a turning off the New Kent Road, close to the Elephant and Castle. It can be seen in the bottom right hand corner of the map, running from New Kent Road due south and off the bottom of the illustration. The group of buildings set at the junction of six roads, in the top left hand corner, is the site of the Elephant and Castle public house. John Henry and Emma BRYER lived here in 1845 when my great-great-grandfather Walter James was born.
