Frederick Street in the 1870s

John Henry and Emma BRYER lived at number 15 Frederick Street from at least early 1841 until around 1847. Frederick Street can be seen at the top centre of the map, running from Neckinger Road to Marine Street. On one side of Frederick Street, at the northernmost end, is a Congregational Chapel; on the other side a tannery, with the soaking beds clearly visible on the map. The smell from the noxious chemicals used must have been all pervading. On the left of the map is the edge of the famous Neckinger Mills, owned by Bevingtons & Sons, the foremost leather processors in Bermondsey.
