Children of The Marriage

Who They Were

Harry SMITH was born in a small village in what is now Ukraine. In 1888, Filipkowce was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his passport, when he left for a new life in England, was issued by Poland, although he is variously described as Austrian or Polish. He arrived in London around 1907, joining his brother Culman, mother Sophia, and at least one of his sisters. Like his brother, he was a master cabinet maker, and quickly established himself as a master, having a shop at 102 Bethnal Green Road. David Fielker, descendant of Harry's sister Debi, believed that Harry lived at 7 Gossett Street Bethnal Green from 1910-1920, but I could not find him at that address in the 1911 census.
Harriett WELCH was known as May; she was born to William Henry WELCH, a railway clerk, and his wife Elizabeth nee KILBEE or KILBER. From at least 1901, the WELCH family has lived at 30 Lady Somerset Road Islington, and Elizabeth was still there in 1934.

I don't know how or where Harry Smith crossed paths with Victoria May HUDSON, but DNA evidence (together with location evidence) shows that Victoria's daughter Thelma was almost certainly Harry's child.

Where They Lived

1920 - 21 - 21 Monnery Street Finsbury Islington; Harry was living here at the time of his marriage and the 1921 Census. Harriett/May was living at 30 Lady Somerset Road Islington at the time of their marriage.
1939 - 1977 - Russetts 14 Kent Road Fleet HAM; Harry and Harriett/May were living here from the mid-1930s until the time of Harry's death.
