This is an examination of one of the Hampshire families of RAMPTON, a family which has lived in the same small village for 250 years, from the earliest sighting in 1752 to the present day. It is interesting to note that, although there are many generations of RAMPTONs in the village of Froyle, from the 17th Century onwards, there are few in the surrounding parishes, with the exception of Monk Sherborne and Tadley. This study should be read in conjunction with the Monk Sherborne research and the Tadley research published elsewhere on this website.

Froyle's oldest Anglican church is dedicated to The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Parish Registers exist from 1653.

All events listed below have been checked, as far as possible, against primary sources. Occasionally, secondary sources, such as Phillimore's Index of Marriages in Hampshire or the International Genealogical Index (IGI), have been used where it has not been possible to view original material, and this is always mentioned in the text with a caveat. Unless otherwise stated, all places are in Hampshire.

Parish Registers have been kept in the Parish of Froyle since 1653, and the first Rampton event is recorded in 1752, with the baptism of Elizabeth, daughter of John & Sarah. There is no direct evidence for the connection of John and Sarah with John born around 1748, and it is possible that the family moved from a neighbouring parish where baby John had been born. More research is needed here, as so far I have no likely candidates in my database.

In 1841, there were three RAMPTON families living in Froyle, and I only as yet have the head of household names. I hope to update this section soon.

By 1851 there were just four Rampton families living in the Parish of Froyle, with many of the younger generation working away from the village, in service or in the army.
