RAMPTONs in Oxfordshire
Introduction
Hampshire does not border Oxfordshire, but the area of Oxfordshire closest to Reading in Berkshire, around Caversham, has provided a home for a few RAMPTONs. They do not appear to be indigenous to the area, however.
Rampton events have been identified in these parishes:
At the time of the 1891 Census the family of
Joseph and Emily were living at 7 Chester Terrace in Caversham. in 1901, their son Joseph had moved to Caversham with his family and Joseph and Emily had returned to Eye.
In 1891, a sole RAMPTON lived at Chipping Norton. He was Arthur RAMPTON, a 14-year-old boarding pupil at Durham House. He gave his birthplace as Highgate, MDX, and I think he may have been
Arthur Edward RAMPTON, born 1876 to James and Sarah (nee LYDFORD) in Pancras, MDX.
At the time of the census in 1861,
Joseph and Emily and their family lived at a house called
Chapmans in the village of Eye & Dunsden. Joseph was a member of the Whitchurch family, but all of his children were born either in Sonning or in Eye, Oxfordshire. The family was still living there in 1871, and many of the family were buried at the parish church of Eye. By 1891, they had moved to 7 Chester Terrace in Caversham, but their son Charles still lived at
Binfield Heath, Eye & Dunsden. In 1901, Joseph and Emily had moved back to Eye living close to son Charles.
At the time of the 1881 Census
William RAMPTON, wife Mary (nee YOUNG) and family were living in Medmenham village. William was a member of the Tadley (Hampshire) family, and emigrated to Queensland, Australia in 1883.
