Additional Information

In the 1881 Census, just before Solomon was married, his bride-to-be was listed as Fanny Hartigan, Widow of Private 101st Regiment, and had with her a son, Wyndham Hartigan, aged 3 [I don't know where Thomas and Alice were]. She had previously been married to Thomas HARTIGAN (Alverstoke, 1870), and he had died in 1880 at Southampton, aged 42.

Solomon himself does not appear anywhere in the 1881 Census, although there is a soldier called Solomon GRIBBER listed as living at the New Barracks, Alverstoke, of the correct age, and having been born in Whitchurch. I have been unable to find a baptism for a Solomon GRIBBER in Whitchurch at the right time, nor can I find any occurrence of the name GRIBBER in Hampshire either in the 1851 census or the 1881 Census. I suspect, therefore, that this is the correct Solomon, who either signed up under an assumed name, or the enumerator recorded the wrong name, or the transcriber of the 1881 index spectacularly misread the name!

In 1891, Solomon and Fanny were living in St Johns North Woolwich, East Ham Essex, along with theire three children, Albert, Harry and Constance, and Wyndham Hartigan aged 13.

In the 1901 census, son Thomas was named RAMPTON and was described as a House Decorator, Albert as a Factory Worker, and Harry as a Rubber Factory Worker; the family was living in West Ham, Essex.

By the time of the 1911 census, Solomon was dead, and Fanny Louisa was still living in West Ham, with sons Thomas and William HARTIGAN, as well as Harry and Constance RAMPTON. I am still trying to trace the later history of the children.
