Additional Information

This is a complicated family group. Harriett had a son, George BRATTON, before she married Charles. I cannot find that they had any children other than Henry Walter (subsequently called Harry). After Charles' death at the tragically young age of 26, Harriet seem to have become the housekeeper to William Friend EASDOWN, and in the 1881 census, Harriet called herself EASDOWN, although I can find no marriage. The three EASDOWN children were born well after the death of William's official wife, so I can only conclude that, despite the lack of legal paper, they lived together as husband and wife. Oddly, James William Friend EASDOWN, was registered as RAMPTON, mother's maiden name also RAMPTON, but when he married in 1903 and died in 1947, both events were registered as EASDOWN. William Albert, however, was registered as EASDOWN with mother's maiden name BRATTON, and Rose Laurel was also registered as EASDOWN.

Harriett continued to live in Southfleet, named RAMPTON in 1901, and after William died in 1903 (aged 82); in 1911 she is found there still, living with son Harry and two of her three EASDOWN children. When she died in 1923, her death was registered as RAMPTON.

Her son George was named RAMPTON in the 1881 census, when he was living with the EASDOWNs, and in 1891 when he was a lodger in Stone KEN. By 1891, he had reverted to using the name BRATTON, and can be seen in the census, living with wife Mary, 1-year old Kathleen, and 7-year old stepson, William DRISCOL. In 1911, still named BRATTON, stepson William is now called BRATTON, and the children are listed as: Kathleen, John (9), and George (3). In addition there were a number of DRISCALLs listed as boarders, presumably Mary's relatives.
