Who They Were
Henry is described as a painter and oil cloth manufacturer on various certificates, and Joseph Francis seems to have followed him into the trade. This is a particularly tragic family, and one that has been difficult to investigate. I have not found Henry and Jane in any census. In 1851, John and Joseph lived with their uncle MEE, and Jane Henry H and James were living with grandmother Joyce HOLLAND.
Mary Ann died aged 2 in 1845.
Joseph Francis fell out of a boat and drowned in 1859, and although his father is named on the death certificate, he did not register the death.
John Bryer died in 1865 of Phthisis; his grandmother registered his death.
James died aged 61, and Henry Holland Bryer at age 65; they were the only two children I have found that went on to have a family. I can't find that Jane married. James lost his first wife after only 10 years of marriage.
Where They Lived
In April 1843, the family were living at 6 Pitt Street, St George the Martyr Southwark.
In the 1851 Census, John and Joseph were living with their uncle and aunt William and Ann Mee at 2 Romney Place Greenwich; Jane, Henry Holland and James were living with their Holland grandparents at 29 Market Place Greenwich. Henry and Jane are nowhere to be found.
In 1859, at the time Joseph Francis drowned his father appears to have been alive and probably living in Greenwich, but the newspaper report of the drowning only gives William Mee's address, 5 Alexander Terrace Bridge Street.
