Who They Were
So far this chart contains some speculation. Of the birth certificates I have see for the children, all give the father's name as John BRYER, hatter. Only on the death certificate for John Nathaniel does it give the father's name as John Daniel Bryer. All the children have been confirmed as being born to John Bryer and Mary Appleton. I'm not sure where the Daniel came from, whether it was an error on the part of the registrar, or Mary misspoke when giving the details. Little John Nathaniel, only 18 months old, died of Hooping cough and convulsions.
On the Marriage register record of their marriage, John's father is given as James Bryer, Carpenter.
This is interesting, because a number of the Bristol/Bath/Somerset Bryers were carpenters/carvers/gilders. I wonder if this john slots into one of those families? There was one John BRYER born in 1822 in Bristol. He was John Tuck BRYER, son of James and Sally BRYER, and was born on 16 Jun 1822. His christening took place at the Tabernacle Bristol on 13 Oct 1822 [these facts are transcribed in the British Vital Records Index]. It cannot be the same John however, as John Tuck Bryer married a lady called Margaret and lived out his life, as far as I can determine, in Somerset. There are no John Daniel's listed in Family Search. The hunt continues.
Where They Lived
In 1853, when Hannah was born they were living at 49 John Street Christchurch St Saviour.
The 1861 Census shows them living at 7 Bayleys Buildings, St Saviour, with only James and Samuel at home. Hannah was only eight years old and unlikely to have been away at work - perhaps she was staying with relatives? - if so, they didn't live in Christchurch!
In 1862, when Caroline was born, they were living at 9 Ann's Place, Lant Street.
Mary died a particularly horrific death, aged 45, having had her leg amputated, and suffering Chronic Pyaemia and abcesses on her liver and kidney. No family member is named on the certificate as informant, although her occupation is given as Widow of John Bryer, Hatter.
