Who They Were
Where They Lived
In 1841, the newly married couple were living in Dalham. In 1851 Robert Mary Ann and Phoebe were living in Tottenham Court Road St Giles MDX; Robert gave his occupation as Miller and his birthplave as Barra Suffolk; Mary Ann gave her birthplace as Howsden Suffolk, and Phoebe's as Dalham. In 1861>, the three were living at 35 Great James Street in the parish of St Andrew Holborn; Mary Ann now said she was born in Denham Suffolk. With them was George Fitch, brother in law, a widower aged 60 and born in what looks like Cheasley Suffolk. His occupation was given as House Agent. In the 1881 census, Phoebe stated that she had been born in Marylebone, which leads me to suspect that she had been very young when they moved to London.
In the 1871 Census, Robert and Mary Ann were living with their daughter Phoebe and her husband and young family in Gresse Street, just off Oxford Street; Mary Ann was described as a Nurse. Mary Ann BISHOP was still alive in 1874, when she was informant of the death of her grandson Albert Ernest. At that time, she gave her address as 40 Upper Rathbone Place Marylebone. By 1881 she was dead, and Robert was living as a widower with Phoebe and her family.
