Who They Were
Martha's son, George, looks like he might have had his biological father's surname as a middle name - Tyers does not look like a forename; apart from his birth and death/probate records, however, I have been unable to find anything else out about him.
James and Martha's son Robert has a very unusual name; I have no idea where the Rapley comes from, it looks like another surname, but the Indigo is truely unique. He joined the 2nd Battalion Welch Regiment, rising to corporal, before being killed in one of the Somme battles in 1916.
Where They Lived
In 1891, James Smithers was lodging with the Gasson family at 17 Yew Tree Road Beckenham KEN; his widowed mother, Eliza Ottaway, was also there. In 1901, the James and Martha lived at 17 Yew Tree Road Beckenham KEN with George (Martha's illegitimate son), Minnie and Robert. In 1911, they lived at 1 Gowland Place Beckenham; the census entry sheet confirms that they had had 6 children, one of which had died. From at least 1916 to 1939, James and Martha lived at 8 Brook Place Beckenham, and were at the same address when James died in 1944. He left his wife £167 14s 5d when his will was proved on 24 Jan 1945
