RAMPTONs in Berkshire

Introduction
Despite its close proximity to Hampshire, and the largest concentration of Ramptons in the south of England, there is little evidence of a great spread into Berkshire from Hampshire. The earliest event I have been able to trace in Berkshire is the marriage of Stephen Rampton to Judith Blackeman, which took place in Hurst on 3 Dec 1638 [IGI]. On 18 Jun 1691, in Basildon, George Rampton married Anne Walton [IGI]; on 31 May 1721, in Thatcham, Robert Hatt married Ede Rampton; and on 28 August 1732, in Arborfield, Nicholas Binfield (of Shinfield Berkshire) married Mary Rampton (of Norton Hampshire). In a century, only four marriages took place; no baptisms have been found so far. The next events, chronologically, took place in Stratfield Mortimer.

Rampton events have been identified in these parishes:

Aldermaston Burghfield
Medmenham Newbury Stratfield Mortimer Reading
Wantage Wokingham

Aldermaston
Aldermaston is situated in the central section of Berkshire, bordering Hampshire to the south. It is closest to Tadley parish, and it seems surprising that there are not more Rampton events in this parish, given its proximity to the main centre of Rampton activity.

Stratfield Mortimer
The Church of St Mary at Stratfield Mortimer has Parish Records from 1681, earlier registers having been destroyed in a fire at the Parish Clerk's house. However, Bishop's Transcripts do exist from 1615 for most earlier years. RAMPTONs first appeared in Stratfield in 1744 with the baptism of Ann to Richard and Ann. This family has strong links with Silchester, just across the border in Hampshire, and they have been included in the Hampshire section of this study because of the close intermingling.
