Who They Were

Frederick was a map and chart engraver his whole life; some of his work can be found in County Post Office Directories. From 1800 the Post Office produced Directories, first under their own name, and from 1835, when the rights were sold to Frederick Kelly, Kelly's Post Office Directory. From 1835 maps of the counties engraved by Benjamin Rees Davies were published to accompany them. In the 1870s new plates were introduced. These were the work of Frederick Bryer (1840?-1919) and were published well into the twentieth century. Kelly's Directory only ceased publication in the 1970s.

Frances was the daughter of another Frances, and both spelled their name with an extra 's' at the end. In fact, Frances is even named Francess on her gravestone (see link above).

Where They Lived

When they married in 1865, both Frederick and Frances gave their address as Bronti Place Newington.

In May 1867, when their first child was born, they were living at 9 Clarence Gardens, in Regents Park.

By September 1870, they had moved to 53 William Street, in Regents Park, the address given on the parish register of St Marylebone for the joint baptism of Frederick John and Florence Adelaide.

By May 1875, they had moved to 32 Cooks Road, St Peter Walworth, in the parish of St Saviour.

In the 1881 Census, the family were living at 157 Shardloes Road, Greenwich (Parish of St Paul Deptford). They remained here for some years, and were at the same address in the 1891 census and at the time of their son Frederick's marriage in August 1892.

At the time of the 1901 census, they were still living in Shardloes Road. In 1911 Frederick, Frances and Percy Arthur were still in Deptford, although this time they had Elizabeth HOLLAND (married, aged 64) living with them; she is described as Sister to the head of the household (Frederick), but I have not been able to identify her in either Frederick or Frances' family.
