Who They Were
Alfred's father, Wilhelm, was born in Germany circa 1850, and in the 1881 census was a Baker, living at 186 Kentish Town Road, St Pancras. His mother's name was DELLOW or DELLON (spellings vary); they had been married in the City of London in 1878. In 1871, Wilhelm was single and living in Chorlton on Medlock Manchester, and his occupation was given as Clerk. By 1881, he had changed his name to William and was a baker in St Pancras, married to Mary (age 24 born Essex) with infant sons William and Harry. By 1891, he had been widowed, and was living in Sidney Road Hackney with sons Henry P and Alfred A. In 1892 he married Susan Agness FLEET in Hackney. In 1901, he was a foreman baker, living in Islington with second wife Susan and 8-year old daughter Dorothy. At the time of the 1911 census, he had become a Provision Dealer; I haven't yet located Susan or Dorothy in the 1911 census.
As far as Alfred and Lily are concerned, I know very little. They moved out of London to Essex, but thereafter I can find no records of subsequent children, nor death of either of them. I suspect that they may have changed their surname because of anti-German sentiment during WW1, but that has yet to be proved.
Where They Lived
At the time of her marriage, both Lily Grace and Alfred Alexander gave 2 Charrington Street as their place of residence. In 1911, the couple were living in St Giles without Cripplegate MDX. It is clear that sometime between 1911 and 1915 they moved to West Ham ESS.
