Children of The Marriage(s)

Who They Were

Rosina worked in the rag trade for most of her life, first in clothing then as a furrier. My mother remembered her "Auntie Rose" with great affection; she said Rose was always very smartly dressed. Her first husband, Harold, died tragically young, after only two years of marriage. His father was Thomas Ward, a Clerk.

Rosina's second husband, Walter Harrison, was also a widower, aged 64, and gave his occupation as Provision Merchant; Rosina was still a Fur Liner. Walter's father had been Charles Harrison; Rosina gave her father as Walter John Hudson deceased, but in fact he did not die until 1943. One of the witnesses to this second marriage was Henry James FOSTER, Rosina's sister Victoria's husband.

In 1930, 19-27 July, Rosina travelled to USA on the SS Caronia, from Southampton to New York. She gave her details as widow, 38, Furtrade Manageress, 5ft 6in, fair hair blue eyes. She names her mother, living in King's Cross, and gave her ultimate destination as St Paul Minnesota, intending to become a citizen. Her sponsor was Mr A Simson. It is obvious that she returned to England within a few years.
When she died, in a care home in Southall of bronchopneumonia and congestive cardiac failure, her younger brother Thomas Alfred informed the registrar. The name change, from Harrison to Walters and then back again is curious. My Mum's address book had her as Walters, but the marriage certificate and Rosina's death certificate named her Harrison; Walter's death certificate names him Walter William WALTERS otherwise HARRISON. Perhaps he had disliked being called Walter Walters and had adopted the name Harrison as a younger man, but was still legally Walters (in which case why did he marry as Harrison?

Where They Lived

In 1911, Rosina was living in lodgings with her mother and the rest of the children, in Islington.

In 1917, at the time of their marriage, Harold WARD was living at 6 Normanby Road Willesden, and Rosina was living at 20 Denzil Road Willesden.

In 1919, Harold died in the Royal Free Finsbury Hospital in St Pancras, but at the time, his address was given as 61 Whitfield Street Pancras.

In 1938, Rosina was living at 5 Woodford Avenue Greenford, and Walter Harrison was living at 14 Horsenden Crescent Greenford MDX.

In 1943, when she registered her father's death, Rosina was still living at 14 Horsenden Crescent Greenford. Her niece Thelma's diary gave her name, rather confusingly, as Mrs Walters of 16 Horsenden Crescent. When she married Walter his name was given as Harrison, and her death certificate also names her Harrison. However, Walter's death certificate reads Walter William Walters otherwise Harrison; I have yet to discover where the Walters fits in. It seems for the last few years of her life, she lived in the Martin House Care Home, Swift Road, Southall; this care home still exists today.
