Who They Were
On the certificate of their marriage, Walter John's father is given as Walter HUDSON, Gas-fitter by trade. I have searched the London Trades directories of the time with no success so far. I have, however, found a Walter HUDSON who might fit the bill. In the 1881 Census, father Walter gives his occupation as Smith, but I felt that a smith could easily switch trades to that of Gas-fitter if there were more work in that area. I also have a birth certificate for Walter John (born 7 September 1867 at 12 Curriers Row, Blackfriars) to Walter and Charlotte Ann Hudson, father's occupation smith. So, if this is the right Walter John, he was born within the sound of Bow Bells making him a true Cockney!
Walter HUDSON and Charlotte Ann MORRIS, aged 22 and 19 respectively, were married at St Luke's Chelsea, on 22nd April 1867 (Walter John was, apparently, already on the way). Walter's father was given as Thomas, a soldier, and Charlotte Ann's father as John Edward MORRIS, (deceased), a Gold Blocker.
Charlotte died of Mitral Disease, Bronchitis and Angina Pectoris in University College Hospital, aged only 33.
After Charlotte's death, and the committal of her husband Walter James Bryer, Phoebe Bryer moved in with Walter and renamed herself Phoebe Hudson (I can find no marriage for them, even after Walter James Bryer's death in 1896). On his death certificate, his address was given as 47 Mornington Road St Pancras; son A Hudson informed the registrar. I have written more about Walter and Phoebe in my blog.
Where They Lived
1868 - At the time of their marriage Walter was living at number 27 Doyley Street Chelsea, and Charlotte was a few doors away, at number 23.
1869 - when daughter Charlotte was baptised, they lived in Seymour Street St Pancras.
1870 - When Arthur was born they were living at 27 Little Earl Street St Giles.
1881 - On Charlotte's death certificate their address was given as 7 King Street Regent Street, in the Tottenham Court Road area of Pancras.
1881 - Walter was a widower living in Little Compton Street St Ann Soho with his four sons, his daughter Charlotte having died in infancy.
circa 1885 - Walter met Phoebe Bryer (nee Bishop), and although they did not marry, they lived together as man and wife thereafter.
1891 - Walter and Phoebe lived at 15 Little Marylebone Street Cavendish Square St Marylebone, with his daughter Maud and her daughter Phoebe, both named Hudson on the census; Walter James Bryer was in the Bethnal House Lunatic Asylum and had probably been there for some time. In 1896, Walter James Bryer, Phoebe's lawful husband, died but it appears they did not legally marry even then.
1901 - they lived at 176 Great Titchfield Street St Marylebone; Walter spent some time in hospital, and the Poor Law Infirmary records show he was discharged on 11 Feb 1905 to his wife Phoebe at that same address.
1911 - they lived at 12 Foley Street St Marylebone.
1919 - Walter died in Westminster Hospital, and his home address was given as 47 Mornington Road St Pancras.
1921 - Phoebe was living alone at 47 Mornington Road, the census form was completed for her by her son in law Thomas James PECK.
1924 - Phoebe died at 47 Mornington Road.
