Who They Were
Walter John and Rosina Jane were my great-grandparents. Although I never met them, my Mother did, in fact Walter went to live with the Foster family just before World War 2, and she and my aunts had lots of tales of the smelly old man who smoked a disgusting pipe and made their lives in the cramped house in Virginia Water even more uncomfortable and cramped.
Growing up, I only knew about three sisters and three brothers for this family; I had no idea there were two more sisters. Lily died aged 20, but I have been unable as yet to find a death record for Jessie.
In 1915, when she was 46 years old, Rosina Jane went to the State Studios at 124 Upper Street Islington with her three sons, and sat for a photograph.
At about the same time, her three surviving daughters also had their photograph taken, although the name of the studio is not given on the small postcard.
Rosina Jane has been a bit of a puzzle; I knew she was still alive in September 1930, as she was witness at the marriage of her daughter, Victoria May; however, I believed from family hearsay that she had died before the start of World War 2. I now know that this was not the whole story. In the 1911 census, she and Walter John were living apart (see below); I think the marriage must have broken down, although I have no evidence of a divorce as yet. I do know that, in 1935, she married Frederick ELMS in Edmonton, and claimed, at the time, to have been a widow; she wasn't, as Walter John was still alive. She was also economical with the truth about her age, saying she was 64 when she was in fact 66. Once I knew her new married name, I was able to find her death registration, in 1937; she died of Myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) in the North Middlesex County Hospital Edmonton. Frederick Elms had been born the youngest son of Robert ELMS, a Hotel Porter, and Elizabeth JINKS. Their Family Chart can be seen here.
The 1921 census reveals some interesting facts about Rosina. She Freddie and Alfie were living at 30 All Saints Street Islington; at the same address were Florence Pateman and her children Arthur and Florence, just returned from Australia. Also in the household, was Frederick Elms, boarder, labourer at the British Museum. In 1928, the voter registration records for the same address show the following qualified voters:
Frederick Elms was living with Florence Pateman and Thomas Arthur Hudson at 1 Melgund Road N5 at the time of the 1939 National Register.
When Frederick Elms died in 1944, his address was given as 19 Ronalds Road Islington; stepson Frederick Herbert was the informant.
Walter John may have served in the army during WW1. Lilian Ruth's death certificate says she was the daughter of Walter John Hudson, Sapper R E. Lilian died of Pneumonia and acute pulmonary oedema. The informant was Stella Bridges, no relationship given but of the same address. Lilian had been a domestic servant.
Walter John went to live with his daughter Victoria May at 41 Crown Road Virginia Water Surrey just before the outbreak of the war [see his daughter, Margaret's, account of life with granddad in Virginia Water], and died at 10 Warren Road Guildford (I believe this was the address of St Luke's Hospital Guildford) in 1943. The cause of death given on the death certificate was Pneumonia, Cerebral Thrombosis, Arteriosclerosis and Emphysema. Daughter Rose of 14 Horsenden Crescent Greenford MDX was the informant (she is given as R. C. Harrison).
Tragedies strike every family, but it was particularly cruel to find Jessie's name on the paper copy of the 1911 census for this family, struck through with a pencil because she was in hospital, and died of Valvular diseas of the heart in August of that year. Lilian, too, had a very short life. She died aged 20, a domestic servant in Bloomsbury, struck down by pneumonia and acute pulmonary oedema. From the date I would surmise that she was a victim of the flu epidemic, 1918-20.
Where They Lived
At the time of their marriage, Walter John was living at 54 Bemerton Street, and Rosina was living at 4 Rufford Street, both in Islington (Rosina had been at this address with her brother and two sisters at the time of the 1891 census).
At the time of Florence's birth in 1895, they were living at 13 Story Street Islington.
In May 1897, at the time of Victoria May's birth and that of Lilian Ruth, they were living at 18 All Saint's Street, Islington.
1901 - 9a Busaco Street Clerkenwell MDX; Victoria May HUDSON living with her parents and siblings. Busaco Street was in Pentonville, built between 1808 and 1810 on the then Penton Estate. "The only fresh street laid out after that [1808] was Wellington (later Busaco) Street, an afterthought in the form of a long cul-de-sac tucked in from about 1810 between the backs of houses in Cumming and Southampton Streets north of Collier Street." [British History website].
1908 - When Rosina Jane's sister Phoebe married, she gave her address as 30 All Saints Street, Islington, and it seems that she was living with Rosina at the time, since Rosina lived at that address until at least 1928. All Saint's Street overlooked the marshalling yards at Kings Cross Station.
1911 - 30 All Saints Street King's Cross Islington MDX; Rosina and Walter were living apart. Rosina and the children were living in King's Cross Islington; Walter was at the Rowton Lodging House Arlington Road Canning Town, in St Pancras. Both described themselves as married, but it looks like there had been a breakdown in the marriage.
1921 - Rosina was living at 30 All Saints Street Islington, and was still there in 1928. With her were Frederick and Thomas Alfred, Florence Phoebe and her 2 children just returned from Australia, and Frederick ELMS.
1935 - When Rosina Jane remarried in she gave her address and that of her husband, as 134 Galliard Avenue Edmonton.
1936 - Rosina and Frederick ELMS lived at 70 Ripplevale Grove Islington with children Thomas Alfred and Florence Pateman.
1937 - When she died, she and Frederick were living at 15 Sandhurst Road Edmonton.
1939 - Frederick ELMS was living with Florence Phoebe Amelia Pateman and daughter Florence, at 1 Melgund Road N5; also present was her brother Thomas Alfred. 1940 -1943 - Walter John HUDSON lived with his daughter Victoria May and her family at 41 Crown Road Virginia Water SRY.
