Who They Were

Jack and Trudi Florence Phoebe Amelia HUDSON, born 10th March 1895, went to Australia on the Demosthenes, departing from London on 17 April 1915, and worked as a domestic servant in Sydney, until she met and married Arthur Thomas PATEMAN, a railway employee, on 27th August 1918. Arthur Pateman had also been born in London, his parents being Thomas George, a gardener, and Elizabeth Amelia (nee YOUNG). He was 24 at the time of the marriage, and Florence was 23. They had two children, Jack and Florence Lilian (known to the family as Trudi), but the marriage foundered and by January 1922 Florence had returned to London with the children. The marriage was dissolved in July 1926 in New South Wales at Arthur Pateman's request.

Florence and Jack PatemanOn the right is a photograph of Florence and her son Jack Pateman. The inscription on the reverse reads "Home on 48hr leave back from Dunkirk. 1940". Jack's forage cap has a chequered design, similar to some Scottish Regiments style, and I believe he served in the Regimental Band of the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. Of the many questions I have: who is the little boy in the foreground? I am indebted to Ken Turner for lending me this and many other delightful photographs.

Jack and Edith PatemanOn the left is the wedding photograph of Jack Pateman and Edith, taken by a photographer in the Holloway Road, London N7. They had been married in Islington in 1943, and Jack was married in his army uniform.

Tragically, Jack was killed in 1953. He and Edith had had a daughter, Joan Lesley, born 1944 in Blaby LEI. The family had just left for their summer holiday to Cornwall in Jack's motorcycle and sidecar, when Joan found that she had left her favourite teddy-bear behind. They returned home to collect the teddy and were involved in an accident at Yeovil, which killed both Jack and Joan. Ken Turner tells me that Edith survived and went on to remarry.

Florence's daughter, Trudi, married Stephen SANDFORD in 1940 (Islington RD) and had one child, Valerie J SANDFORD, born 1941 in Tonbridge KEN.

Where They Lived

In 1911, Florence was living in lodgings with her mother and the rest of the children, in Islington.

On 17 April 1915 she set sail on the Demosthenes from London, destination Sydney Australia. On the Outgoing passenger list she is described as a Domestic.

In 1921, she was back in London, living at 30 All Saints Street Islington, with her mother Rosina, and children Arthur and Florence. She was still there in 1928, included in the voter registration list.

In 1939, the register shows Florence and daughter Florence Sandford living at 1 Melgund Road N5, with her brother Thomas and Frederick Elms, widower of her mother Rosina. Daughter Florence is described as a Lady Canvasser "Instructor", Florence herself is a Fur-liner, and Thomas a Motor-car cleaner.
