Who They Were
It was very difficult to establish that William Frederick was part of this family [see the separate explanation here]. However, the 1871 Census Returns establish that a 9-year-old William was living with his mother and her husband. There are a number of questions still outstanding, however. Was David William's biological father? It will be almost impossible to prove - there was a two year gap between William's birth and the marriage of his mother; she was very young, only 17 when William was born. Until I find William's marriage certificate, it will not be possible to tell if the name of his father was given at the time of his marriage.
Where They Lived
In the 1871 Census, the family lived at Common Field, Chobham. Young William Frederick was surnamed SMITHERS. In 1881, only Emily was at home with David and Eliza, in Burrow Hill next door to Mary OTTAWAY, the wife of William Frederick, who was away from home on census night.
