Who They Were

William Frederick and Mary Ann were my great-grandparents; I am not entirely sure that they were married. I came to this conclusion when I investigated the origins of their daughter Louisa; I could find no birth record for her, even though on the census records she was most specific about her age and place of birth, Tunbridge Wells. I was also suspicious about William Frederick, because he was very young himself to have been her father, only 15 when Louisa was born. Then, too, was the second born Frederick, whose middle name was WENT; when I put two and two together, I found that Mary Ann had been married to a Mr Charles Went, who was the registered father of Louisa, who was indeed born in 1876 in Tunbridge Wells. I can find no record of Mr Went dying, so I concluded that Mary Ann left him, took her daughter and went home to Chobham. When she discovered she was again pregnant, she needed a father for the child, and her mother's nephew by marriage, William Frederick, stepped into the breach. I have blogged about this family tangle in more detail here.
It was very difficult to establish that William Frederick was part of this family [see the separate explanation here].
William Frederick died at the age of only 39, of Aortic Aneurism Rupture Haemorrhage. Mary Ann also died very young, of Heart disease and Gangrene of right leg. After being orphaned at the age of 11, Lucy Ellen went to live with her sister Ada Emily, for a time, in Nottingham.

Where They Lived

In 1876 when she married Charles Went, Mary Ann was living at 4 Wiltshire Terrace Battersea. In 1881, Mary Ann was living on her own (although next door to future mother-in-law Eliza Smithers) with children Louisa and Frederick, in Burrow Hill, Chobham. In 1891, William was back in the family, living at Victor Cottages, Addlestone, SRY. In 1901, William was dead, and Mary Ann was living with Charles, Arthur, and Nelly (Lucy) at 5 Victoria Street Addlestone.
