The 1841 census took place on Sunday 6th June, and is the earliest census giving names which has survived; earlier censuses recorded names but after the statistical information was derived from them the originals were destroyed. It is important to note that, whilst the ages of children are given as reported, the ages of adults was rounded to the nearest 5 years. Only one family of Ramptons is listed as living in Silchester, that of James (aged 60) and Mary (also aged 60), together with daughter Mary (aged 30). Their address is given as Silchester Common,, which lies to the west of Silchester itself, almost, in fact, in Pamber Heath.

On Sunday 30th March 1851, the Census of the whole United Kingdom was taken. Only two people with the name Rampton were living in Silchester at the time, Mary Widow of James the carpenter, aged 71 and described as a Grocer, and their only child Mary aged 44, an Assistant. Both were to die before the next census was taken. With them lived Mary's niece Ann ROBINS, aged 34, a Servant. The family lived at 46 Ramptons Lane - I wonder how the lane came to be called that!?

There were no Ramptons living in Silchester at the time of either the 1881 or the 1891 censuses.
