Additional Information

William stated that he was a Marine, at the time he married in 1858; he stated that his father, David, was a Veterinary Surgeon! Presumably, being far from home, he assumed that no-one would or could verify this untruth! Elizabeth's father was given as Charles POPE, Musician.

Being in the services, this couple travelled a good deal. In 1861, they were living in Park Street Alverstoke, HAM; in 1871 they were living in St Giles Northampton. By the time of the 1881 Census, they were living at the George Street Workmens Club and Institute in Chatham, and William was described as a Pensioner of the Royal Marines. In 1891, he was working as a dockyard labourer and he and Elizabeth were still living in George Street Chatham, with a visitor from Hampshire, Harry WRIGHT aged 25. In 1901, they were still living in Chatham, and William died there in 1904. When Elizabeth died in 1907, she named Jane E. & William MARCH her beneficiaries; they appear to have been her neighbours in George Sreet Chatham.
