Additional Information
I don't know if Alice was married before or whether Emma Jane was born out of wedlock. I do know that, in 1871, when the family was living in Hartley Wintney, Emma Jane was described as George's daughter and bore the name RAMPTON, but when she married in 1881 she married under the name SUMNER. In 1881, George was living in Tilehurst, BRK, with Emma Jane and her new husband, as well as a couple of lodgers. Alice was boarding at 172 Kennet Side St Giles Reading, described as married, and with the occupation Laundress. Why were they living apart?
At the time of the 1891 census George and Alice were living together in Theale, and they were still there in 1901. By the time of the 1911 census, George had been widowed and was boarding in Pangbourne, BRK.
