Who They Were

Wyndham is a bit of a mystery. On the face of it, he seems to have lived most of his life in Cheltenham as a veterinary surgeon; but whilst his wife Marian features in most of the census entries, I can find no marriage for them. The only marriage I can find in FreeBMD for a Wyndham Bryer is to Ellen SIMPSON in Marylebone. I can find only one child born to a Bryer/Simpson couple, and the fact that their child Nellie is listed in the 1881 census livig with Wyndham, and also died in Cheltenham helps in the conclusion that the Wyndham married to Ellen is the same Wyndham who lived in Cheltenham.

Marian Ellen JONES was the daughter of Ralph Augustus Jones and his wife Frances. Ralph was a Railway Station Master, born in Manchester, but living in Bicester at least since 1860. In both the 1861 and the 1881 censuses, Marian Ellen is living with her parents in Oxfordshire, so the marriage to Wyndham has to have taken place between March 1881 and 1889.

In Cheltenham council meeting minutes for 1891, notice is given regarding a planning application by Mr Wyndham Bryer to the property Veterinary Forge, St George's Place.

Where They Lived

In the censuses for 1841, 1851 and 1861, Wyndham was living with his parents at 5 St Georges Terrace Cheltenham.

I have not been able to find him yet in the 1871 census, but in 1881 he was still in Cheltenham, living with daughter Nellie, his widowed mother Sarah, and his sister Ellen Pendry, who seems to have been housekeeper for him, even though still married. In this census he said he was married, but where was Ellen his wife?

In 1891 He is living with wife Marian (aged 31), Winifred, and a visitor Emily J Jones (age 34), presumably Marian's sister.

In 1901, Winifred was a boarding school in Thame, on the Oxforshire/Berkshire border, while Wyndham and Marian were living in St Georges Place Cheltenham with two servants.

By 1911, Wyndham had retired and the family was living in Christchurch HAM, where Wyndham died the following year.
