Who They Were

It is interesting to read William's mother's Will, since it provides a hint as to why he may have moved from Dorset to Gloucestershire. In the will of 1823, Mary Bryer bequeathed to William property in St Pauls Bristol, whereas all other property mentioned in the Will was situated in Dorset. The connection between Dorset and Bristol was obviously established within the family, and William's bequest may have been the spur to send the newly married couple to Bristol or Cheltenham.

William was MRCVS, and a respected Veterinary surgeon. In 1875 he was appointed to succeed his father as veterinary inspector (notice in the Cheltenham Examiner for Sept 1875).

Where They Lived

In 1841, the family was living at Greyhound Lane Cheltenham. There was no William at home, but Sarah was living there with four children.

In 1851, the family was living at 5 St Georges Terrace Cheltenham, GLS. Wyndham was a sailor and served in the Merchant Navy; and Clement is given (in the 1881 census) as an Independent Minister.

In 1861, they were living at St Georges Terrace Cheltenham, with son Wyndham, and William's brother Stephen. In 1881, Sarah, now widowed and living on Income derived from Business, was living with son Wyndham, his daughter Nellie, and Wyndham's sister Ellen Pendry.
