Who They Were

Clement was an extremely well-travelled person. When he was only sixteen, on 25 Oct 1919, he travelled from London to Melbourne VIC AUS on the Orontes. As a student, he departed from Southampton on 5 Aug 1925 sailing to Quebec CAN on the Asconia. On 1 Apr 1931, he again sailed from Southampton on the Jervis Bay this time to Sydney NSW AUS, his occupation was described as the Colonial Service. There is an additional entry in Familysearch for a departure on 6 Jun 1931 from Plymouth on the Balronald; did he fly back from Sydney almost as soon as he had arrived? It seems a very short turnaround!

On 24 Dec 1937, he sailed from Suva Fiji on the Mariposa, a ship which had originated in San Francisco, to Auckland NZ. This journey is interesting, because it was quickly followed by a return journey, leaving Auckland on 7 Feb 1938 on the Monterey bound for Suva (and eventually San Fransisco). A month later, he married Maria, daughter of Benjamin and Clara HUGHES. And there the trail of his adventures is lost; except for one last immigration record, of a Clement Bryer, no age given, arriving alone on the Iberia in Auckland NZ in June 1971, having sailed from Sydney. He gave his nationality as New Zealander and his country of birth Fiji; his address is given as 34 Huntingtree Avenue Sandringham Auckland NZ. Could this have been Clement Wyndham's son?

There is one more intriguing piece of information, found indexed in Familysearch. An obituary, published in a New Zealand newspaper, for the death of Alice Maude Bryer, mother of Clement Wyndham, despite the fact she had died in Taunton SOM. People mentioned in the obituary are: Rev Clement Bryer, husband of the deceased; Clement Wyndham Bryer, son; ?Bryer, child; ?A*, child; Edward Butter [I assume the obituary author meant Edwin RUTTER, husband of Clement's sister Enid], son; Stephen Bryer, son; Elizabeth S* A*N, child. Some of these names are intriguing; I don't know who child ?Bryer can be, ?A* might be daughter Enid Candace, but child Elizabeth S* A*N is a complete mystery. I have only found three children of the marriage between Clement Arthur Ferdinand Bryer and Alice Maude Gatward, and none of them is called Elizabeth, and neither of the sons was married to and ELizabeth.

Where They Lived

It would seem that Clement emigrated to Fiji in the 1930s, and possibly thereafter to Auckland NZ.
