Children of the Marriage

Who They Were

As shown below, Jane had a sister, Mary Ann Bolt. Both the Bolts and the Bryers had married in 1849 in Weymouth, but the GRO indexing looks odd. In the list of names on the same page as Thomas's marriage (Sep Q p. 236), there is no Jane, and no other surname SWAIN; there is a John Swayn ATTFIELD listed. On Alfred Bolt's page (Sep Q p. 259), the only Mary Ann listed is Mary Ann ATTFIELD. I have ordered the certificate as I am very confused now as to her name. Was she a widow when she married Thomas, married name SWAIN? Was her full name Jane Swayn Attfield and the handwritten index confused Jane and John?
The marriage certificate shows that she was Jane SWAYNE ATTFIELD, daughter of George SWAYNE ATTFIELD, gentleman [died 1842, Weymouth RD]. It looks like the GRO indexing went awry in the face of a non-hyphenated double surname. At the time of their marriage, Thomas lived in Dorchester and Jane in Melcombe Regis. Charles Gray BRYER, Thomas's younger brother, was one of the witnesses.

When probabte was granted on Thomas's will, on 3 Mar 1910, the main beneficiary was named Henry Anthony HUXTABLE. I do not yet know his relationship (if any) to the Bryers.

Where They Lived

In 1851, Thomas and Jane appear to be living apart. Thomas is staying with a friend in Liverpool, says he is married and the birth year is about right; he is an Officer in a Bord Goal, the same as his friend. Jane is staying with her sister Mary Ann and Mary Ann's husband Alfred BOLT, a butcher, in Melcombe Regis DOR.

In 1861 and 1871, they are conspicuous by their absence.

In 1881, Thomas and Jane were living at 18 Wollaston Terrace All Saints Dorchester. In 1891 in Wollaston Road All Saints, and in 1901 in Salisbury Street All Saints, where Jane died the following year.
