Albert Frank OTTAWAY
1917 - 1944

Albert Frank was the youngest child of Frederick and Lucy Ottaway, and was born 1 May 1917 at Chobham.

On 15 Jan 1940, Albert enlisted, initially in the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment, service number 6093919. He was transferred to the Sherwood Foresters on 6 Mar 1942, and subsequently to the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment. He saw action in India, before going to Myanmar (Burma) where he was killed in action on 3 Jul 1944, at the age of 27. He is commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial Face 13.

Ronald Harvey OTTAWAY
1923 - 1944

Ronald was the son of Samuel Herbert and Bessie Florence Ottaway, and was born in the Hersham area of Surrey in 1923. He enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment on 8 Dec 1941 and served as a Trooper in the Royal Armoured Corps and the 6th Battalion (Royal Northumberland Fusiliers) Royal Tank Regiment, service number 6153604. He died at Aldershot Surrey on 2 Aug 1944.

William James OTTAWAY
1886 - 1916

William James was born William James HESSEY to Sarah HESSEY, a single woman. Sarah subsequently married William Henry OTTAWAY, and William James became known as Ottaway from that day. He enlisted in the Royal Marine Light Infantry on 2 Oct 1906.

His Service History: ex-CH/15626 Private RMLI, enlisted Southampton 2/10/1906-2/2/1910 transferred to Portsmouth RMLI ; Portsmouth Bn. at Ostend, Dunkirk & Defence of Antwerp 1914; 4/10/14 wounded near Lierre; RM Brigade 12/9/14-24/9/15 (no service recorded at Gallipoli); Embarked HMS "Invincible" 12/11/15-31/5/16 DD.
He was on HMS Invincible, when it was involved in the Battle of Jutland, and was one of those whose body was never recovered. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

He was married to Ellen DERRICK on 30 Jun 1913; they had one daughter.

Harry Frederick Valentine SUMNER
1900 - 1918

Harry was born on Valentines Day 1900, hence his name. He was the only son of Harry Sumner and wife Bertha Annie Ottaway. He served in the 9th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, service number 79877, and was killed at one of the battles of the Somme in 1918. He is commemorated on the CWGC website and on FindAGrave.
