Who They Were

William James was a Royal Marine, killed at the Battle of Jutland in 1916; he was stationed on HMS Invincible, Rear-Admiral Hood's flagship and was lost with over 1,000 men including Hood, when the ship exploded and sank (in 90 seconds) having been hit amidships directly above the magazine. He is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial and on the Family War Memorial.

Where They Lived

In 1916 Ellen was living at 13 Foster Road Gosport HAM, later moving to Leesland Road Gosport [Service Pension papers]. In 1939 Ellen was living with her widowed father at 41 Leesland Road Gosport; with them was her brother-in-law John Stephen Ottaway. When she died in 1969, Ellen's address was given as 16 Studland Road Lee on Solent HAM; John Stephen Ottaway gave the same address when he died in 1972, and it is probable that he lived with his widowed sister-in-law for 40 years.
In 1939, daughter Nellie was a parlourmaid at Elm House The Avenue Fareham HAM.
