Who They Were
Edward is a bit of an enigma. My grandfather, his slightly older half-brother, mentioned him in passing, and certainly thought to record Edward's year of death in the family bible, but gave no other information, such as his marriage or children. In fact, I tracked Edward down through the sole piece of information, that he had died in 1960, in the family bible. Fortuitously, although Butler is a very common name, only one person called Edward Butler, of the right age, had died in 1960. From there I traced his marriage and his will.
In his will, a scribbled form will, he left his caravan, savings and life insurance to Mrs Lily Maud MARLOW, widow (who already owned a half share in the caravan).
Edward served in the Royal Navy, service number F50707, from 22 Feb 1918 on HMS President II until 31 Mar 1918 on HMS Tregantle. He is also listed as an airman, service number 250471, in the RAF from 1 Mar 1918. Both records correctly give his date and place of birth and his father's name; perhaps he signed up for both because he did not know which he might prefer.
Daisy Anderson seemed to have preferred the name Kathleen, as apart from her birth certificate, I have mostly found her recorded as Kathleen Daisy. She was the daughter of Murray ANDERSON, a printer's compositor, and his wife Alice Letitia BREWER. She was the informant on Edward's death certificate, but I'm not sure they were living together; since about 1957, the electoral rolls recorded Kathleen living with son Peter and his wife Lilian Maud, but no sign of Edward. There is some confusion over Lilian Maud; Edward's will mentions a Lily Maud Marlow, widow, who I found living in the caravan in 1962, and who seems to have died in 2006 aged 92; it seems odd that she lived with Kathleen but also shared a caravan with Edward.
Where They Lived
1901 - 50 Hawley Road Pancras MDX; Murray Anderson, his wife Alice, and children Alma Lucy, Daisy, Charles, and Berkley.
1911 - 6 Clarendon Road West Green Edmonton MDX; Murray Anderson, his wife Alice, and children Alma Lucy, Daisy Kathleen and Winnifred, plus niece Kate Lucy WATSON.
1960 - Edward died in the Whittington Hospital Pancras MDX, but his address was given as Mile Oak Meadow Glaseby Lane Washington SSX; from his will I deduce that this was a static caravan named possibly Cosy Nook.
1957-1968 - 12 Beaminster House Vauxhall Lambeth SRY; Kathleen with Peter E and Lilian M.
