Who They Were
James was first married to Esther TAYLOR on 17 Nov 1877 in Tadley. Esther was christened on 26 Apr 1857 in Tadley. This family group appears in the 1881 Census.
James moved to Egham in Surrey and found work with the firm of Drake & Mount, Seed Merchants of Egham High Street, working as a carter. In the 1891 Census he appears as a widower in lodgings in the town, employed as a General Labourer and Carman (i.e. Carter). His son, David James, stayed in Baughurst, and appears in the 1891 census living with his grandparents, William and Sarah Butler. A year later James married his second wife, Louisa COLE, aged thirty-one to his thirty-eight. Louisa had moved to Egham from Devon, with her family, in the late 1860s. She was the daughter of William COLE and Maria BEARNE, and had been born in 1860 in Lympstone, Devon. She had been employed as Domestic Servant at the time of her marriage. She died on 16 Jul 1895 in Egham tragically young, of Typhoid Fever, and was buried on 21 Jul 1895 in Englefield Green, Surrey. Her son, William Herbert, my grandfather, was only 5 months old. In January 1904, Louisa's sister Sarah COLE was buried in the same plot in St Jude's Cemetery Englefield Green.
James waited five years before remarrying. James was by now 45 years old, his bride Louisa Mary GRAY was 31 and a spinster. Her father was William Charles GRAY, a gardener and groundsman in Windsor Great Park, and the family had for some years occupied one of the Park Cottages at Bishopsgate. Two of their children, Eliza Fanny and Edith Emily, died in infancy, Eliza Fanny of bronchitis and Edith Emily of Broncho Pneumonia. William Herbert told me that one of the babies died as a result of falling from her pram but neither of the infant certificates mentions a fall.
Much of the information above, particularly the dates of birth of James children, was taken from the large Family Bible passed to William Herbert after the death of his brother David James.
