Who They Were
Hannah lived for many years at Holloway Sanatorium, which was an hospital for the treatment of those suffering temporary mental illness, situated in aesthetically landscaped grounds near Virginia Water, Surrey. It was constructed and financed by the wealthy philanthropist Thomas Holloway, and in style resembles nearby Royal Holloway College for Women also financed by Mr Holloway, a patent medicine vendor. Whatever the reason for her residence there, by 1939 she was living and working in London.
Sidney Austin was 52 and a widower when he married Hannah; the son of Walter Austin a police constable and his wife Susan. Edward Butler, Hannah's brother, was one of the witnesses.
The informant on Hannah's death certificate reads Florence PULLEN niece of 187 Saunders Lane Mayford Woking SRY. I have ot yet identified who this was.
Where They Lived
1921 - Egham SRY; Hannah living with her widowed father James, and brother William. 1929 - 1936 - Hannah listed in the Electoral register as living in Holloway Sanatorium, Egham.
1938 - Hannah at 16 Baron's Court Road Fulham MDX, possibly a servant.
1939 - Hannah at 29 Verbena Gardens Hammersmith MDX, a domestic assistant. Sidney a widower living at 3 Chesson Road Fulham with Frederick W Austin born 12 Mar 1904, a butcher's shop assistant.
1945 - 1965 - 35 Everington Street W6; Hannah's address at the time of her marriage, and the address of Hannah and Sidney until the time of Sidney's death. Also Hannah alone at the same address in 1965.
1985 - 1 Trillington House 241 Uxbridge Road London; address on Hannah's death certificate and probate, a block of sheltered housing units.
