Additional Information
James appears not to have married. In 1851 he was living at home with his parents and various siblings; in 1871, he and his sister Ann [Mary Ann] were the only children left living with aged parents. In 1881, father John had died, and James and Ann were living with their mother. In 1891, mother Mary had died, and Ann was described as James's housekeeper in the census entry. In 1901, James and Ann were still together in Tadley. James died of the Epidemic Pneumonic Plague which swept Europe in 1918/19, aged 88, and Ann erected a moving gravestone to his memory in Tadley St Peter's Churchyard:
The documentation is a little confusing. The gravestone reads 1918, the Parish Record says he was buried on 15 Feb 1919. The latter seems more likely, since the plague began after the war had finished. Moreover, his will was proved 24 May 1919 and date of death is given as 1919. The two beneficiaries indexed by IGI are Thomas APPLETON and Thomas TAYLOR, no Ann. I hope she was not left out of his will.
