In 1861, David was living with his first wife, Eliza, and his 2-year old nephew Albert, in Blissett Street Greenwich. They had been married since 1858, but I cannot find any children of theirs before 1864. Sadly, their firstborn son, Frank, did not survive infancy and Eliza died in 1867 aged 34. In 1881, David, second wife Mary Ann, and family were living at the Brockley Road Board School, Lewisham, KEN, David being the Schoolkeeper.
This family has a tragic story to be told, but even from the bare facts available in official records, it looks like they were cursed. After the death of Frank, son Ernest died in 1885 aged 11, son Sydney in 1888 aged 16, and daughter Lilian in 1890 aged 21. Thereafter, of the two remaining family members, while Gertrude is reasonably easy to find, Henry has been elusive. Gertrude can be found in the 1891 census working as a nurse/domestic servant in Croydon SRY, and again in 1901 as a hospital nurse in Edmonton, MDX, living in the same accommodation as Elizabeth R DAWES (an aunt perhaps?). I haven't found her yet in the 1911 census, but it would appear she never married, and died aged 83 in 1954; her death certificate confirms she had formerly been a Nursing Sister, and was unmarried. Of Henry there is no trace, and so the search continues.
