Who They Were

The Ellen and her children were all named in the will of her cousin Arthur Blewert BRYER, named thus: .
Unto my cousin Ellen PENDRY the sum of three thousand pounds Unto Henry Wentworth PENDRY grandson of the said William Wyndham BRYER the sum of one hundred pounds Unto William Hamilton PENDRY another of his grandsons the sum of one hundred pounds Unto Charles Clement PENDRY another of his grandsons the sum of one hundred pounds
Did he misremember their names? I can find no birth registrations for William Hamilton nor for Henry Wentworth, but do have a Thomas William Henry born 1847 which matches the birth year and place of the Henry W found in the 1851 and 1861 censuses. Did Thomas reinvent his name? Likewise, a William H features in the 1851 census and in Arthur's will, but there is no sign of his birth in the GRO Index, although a William Hamilton Penry did marry in 1872 in Stockport CHS. Likewise Henry Wentworth married as that name in 1884.

Where They Lived

In 1851, Ellen and Thomas were living in Barton St Michael GLS, with sons Henry W and William H. I cannot find Ellen or Thomas in the 1861 census, but Henry W was living with his grandparents in Cheltenham GLS.

In 1881, Ellen was keeping house for her brother Wyndham in Cheltenham; she says she is married, but I have been unable to locate Thomas in this or any other census.

As far as the subsequent history of the children are concerned, Henry Wentworth was a lodger in Aston Birmingham in 1881; in 1891 he was married with 2 children, Talbot and Mabel and living in Upper Sutton Street Aston WAR; in 1901, he was living with a housekeeper in Aston Manor WAR, no wife or children, although he said he was married.

Charles Clement was manager of a hotel bar in 1891, living in Cheltenham with his family, wife Emily Sarah and daughters Dorothy, Elsie and Nora. in 1901, the family was living in Ladywood Birmingham, and Charles was a warehouseman in a Pen Factory; by 1911, he was widowed and living as a boarder in Barrow in Furness LAN, working as a canvasser for a dental hygiene business.
