Additional Information

The marriage of William to Elizabeth is currently speculative. There is a marriage, transcribed by the Harleian Society, for a marriage in Westminster, and the year fits, even though the place is an unusual one for two Hampshire residents to choose for their marriage. In fact, there are two marriages recorded for the 12 June 1821 both involving a William RAMPTON (the second is to Jane WHITWORTH) although I have not as yet been able to trace the origins of this second William. There is little doubt that Elizabeth Norgate was his wife however, and Elizabeth's memorial is testament to that: photos of the headstone and a transcription can be seen here.

In 1851 William and second wife Sarah were living in Old Alresford with their son William; Henry was married and living in Botley, and Charles was living in Alresford with Elizabeth RAMPTON, possibly his sister. In 1871, Sarah was a widow living with niece Helen BALCHIN. In 1881, Sarah was living with William and Maria and their family. She is described as William's Stepmother.

I am curious about the choice of marriage venue for the three sons, as it does not appear that any of the parties was native to Bermondsey. On all three marriage certificates they gave an address in West Street Bermondsey, but I have been unable to locate any of the brides' families in the street at the time of the 1851 census.

Judging by son Henry's Diary of his emigration to America, there was some ill feeling between sons William and Henry, possibly over Henry's conversion to the Mormon religion. Father William, however, thought enough of his second son to send him a little money to help buy his passage; and son William named his second child Henry, born 1854, possibly in recognition of his brother.

When you look this family, you see that, although not numerous, they each made their mark. Paterfamilias William was obviously a reasonably prosperous artisan and he passed his Iron Foundry onto his son William. Henry went to America and founded a famous dynasty in the state of Utah, culminating in one of his descendents being elected Governor of the state. Youngest son Charles became a skilled watchmaker, with two of his sons following him into the trade.
