Additional Information
In 1851, Charles was living in Old Alresford, probably with his sister Elizabeth. Charles may have been working for Joseph Newland, Watchmaker, in 1851/2, since Newland had no. 26 The High Street Alton in 1851, although Charles seems to have taken over renting it from about 1856.
In 1854, at the time of their marriage, Charles and Eliza both gave 13 West Street, Neckinger Bermondsey as their address. In 1853 and 1856 they were living in Alton, as the Poor Rate records show Charles to have been a Watchmaker there.
In the 1881 census the family is found living at 119 West Street Farnham, SRY.
By 1891, they had moved to Dartford KEN, and were living in Spital Street, with Ellen, Lily, Frederick, Henry, and Alice.
In 1901, Charles and Eliza, together with Ellen and Henry, were living in Newbury, BRK.
Arthur Charles, Frederick and Henry all followed their father into the trade. Frederick can be found in 1901 living as a Clockmaker in Hailsham, SSX; Henry was a Watchmaker, still living at home; and Arthur Charles had moved to Kingston upon Thames and raised a large family in his spare time from being a company director and Watchmaker & Jeweller. In fact Arthur Charles went on to found the Freemans mail order catalogue. The marriage details given for the daughters above are speculative, based upon GRO Index information only.
