Additional Information
In 1881, the family was living in West Dean, Westbourne, Sussex. By 1891, they had moved to Spurlings Cottage No. 2, Fareham, Hampshire. James stated that he had been born in Alresford, although records show he was baptised in Hinton Ampner. Hubert is listed as Herbert in the GRO, but he married as Hubert, named his son Hubert William, and when he emigrated to USA he called himself Hubert, do I think that is his correct name. Similarly, Hellen is the name given to census enumerators, but Ellen is her registered name.
In 1901, they were still living in Fareham, this time James gave his place of birth as Sutton, Hampshire.
In 1911, only George remailed with his parents in Fareham; Martha was a Certificated Nurse in London, Rosa had disappeared from sight; I still haven't traced the remaining daughters.
Sadly, in January 1899, Son Tom became mentally ill and was admitted, aged 26, to the Hampshire Lunatic Asylum. He had previously been in the Fareham Workhouse and was suffering from depression bordering on the suicidal. He remained in the asylum until his death in June 1911 at the age of about 38. His Reception Order was kindly supplied to me by Susan Burt who has written a Southampton University Thesis called: Fit Objects for an Asylum: the Hampshire County Lunatic Asylum and its patients 1852-1899. See this website for details of the coverage and how to contact her.
