Vernon emigrated to Canada in early 1910, on the ship Virginianlanding in Halifax Nova Scotia. He took up working as a farmer, having previously been a clerk. On 13 Dec 1915 he joined the Canadian Army, and his attestation papers are available online. He is described as 5ft 8in tall, dark complexion, grey eyes and black hair. At the time he was living in Winnipeg Manitoba. Vernon took time out of fighting in the First World War to return to England and marry Elizabeth and start a family.
