Additional Information

Richard married Jane Matilda ARES on 12 Dec 1849 at Tadley. He was described on the marriage certificate as a bachelor, labourer, the son of Richard Rampton, Shoemaker. Jane Matilda was the daughter of George Ares, labourer. For a long time, the name Gentilda (or Gentilier) Rampton kept cropping up in my research, and I learnt from the president of the Romany Family History Society that she was known to the society as a Romany or traveller, but no one could hazard a guess as to the origin of the name. She was certainly baptised as Gentilda and I believe that the priest at the marriage was unfamiliar with her given name, and so wrote in the register what he thought he had heard, i.e. Jane Matilda (say the names quite quickly slurring them together and you get the idea). When she married George BULL her name was rendered as Gentyler, and I have also seen it written as Gentilier. My reasoning is based on the two marriage entries relating to Gentilda, the marriage to Richard Rampton, and her later marriage to George BULL, on 12 Jan 1867 at Baughurst. On both register entries the bride's father is given as George ARES or AYRES. On the first entry George is given as Labourer, on the second George is said to be a Hawker (a euphemism often used in parish registers for Romany) but they are patently the same person.

Richard died in 1864 and was buried in Wootton St Lawrence on 11 Jul 1864, aged 43 (as given by the Parish Register) or 44 (as given on the death certificate). The cause of death was Stricture of the urethea, retention of urine with estravasation. The informant on the certificate was Ann ROSE; I do not yet know her connection with the family, if any.

Gentilda and Richard seemed to have moved around, judging by the places of birth given for their children in the 1861 and 1871 censuses. In 1861, they were living in Claypitts Wootton St Lawrence, with Thomas, Windham Edward, Anne, and Elizabeth. In 1871, Gentilda and George BULL were living in Popham Lane, North Waltham; George is described as a Sweep and Gentilda as a Hawker. With them lived Gentilda and Richard's children, Betsey, Edward and Albert, as well as George's son by a previous marriage, also named George, aged 14, and born in Baughurst.
