Monk Sherborne at the time of the 1851 Census

On Sunday 30th March 1851, the Census of the whole United Kingdom was taken. In Monk Sherborne there were few Ramptons to be enumerated for the census in fact only four households contained RAMPTONs in 1851, and all households were listed as being in West Heath, an outlying village, just to the north of Charter (or Chatter) Alley and Ramsdell.

In West Heath (no street numbers or house names are given) there lived George and Harriett GARDNER, with Marria RAMPTON (described as George's daughter-in-law, i.e. stepdaughter, aged 3) and their legitimate daughter Elizebeth sic aged 6 months and born in Monk Sherborne.

Next door but one, George and Eliza Rampton and their daughter Caroline lived with Eliza's widowed mother, Elizabeth MONGER, together with Eliza's widowed brother Francis MONGER and Francis' son Alfred. George and Eliza both gave their ages as 34, meaning they were born circa 1817; George and Caroline were born in MS, but Eliza was born in Upton Grey. This George had been born in 1816, the son of Christopher and Sarah (nee MATTINGLEY).

Next door to George and Eliza lived George's uncle Anthony Rampton (a Sawyer), his wife Mary (nee ASH), and their youngest daughter Catherine, then aged 15. Anthony was by this time 57 years old and Mary was 55. It is from this census entry that we learn that Mary was born in Chelsea.

In the next house to Anthony was his brother Christopher, George's father, an Agricultural Labourer and 59 years old. With Christopher lived his wife Sarah (aged 57, born in Wootton St Lawrence), their daughters Emily (23), Eliza (20) and Mary (17), and two nieces, Amelia aged 8 born in MS and Elizabeth aged 6 born in Wootton St Lawrence.
