Additional Information
Harriett married George GARDNER on 4 May 1850 at MS. Whilst Anthony and Edmund were travelling to America, it was Harriett and George who emigrated to Australia, and I am indebted to Mr Max Rowland for the information that Harriett died there, in Redbourneberry New South Wales, on 13 Feb 1916.
Donald Kirkam has supplied information on the Gardner's voyage to and life in Australia, and I am indebted to him for the information. The Gardners left Southampton on Meteor on 17 March 1853 and arrived Sydney, NSW, on 3 July 1853. With George and Harriett were Harriett's illegitimate daughter Maria RAMPTON(aged 5), and the two Gardner children, Elizabeth (aged 3) and Eleanor an infant of 10 months.
There is a record of Maria Rampton, daughter of Harriett Rampton, being baptised on 26 Dec 1847. No father's name is given, and it is well before Harriett's marriage to George, and so is unlikely to be his child. Maria was living with George & Harriet, and her half-sister Elizabeth, at the time of the 1851 census.
