Who They Were

This was another tricky family to untangle, not least because of the poor handwriting on the 1911 census household sheet, which made the names of the two children very difficult to decipher. A letter from a cousin was helpful in working out the Winterbottom question, and this is my analysis of what probably took place.
Ada was in service in Poole DOR in 1901, but obviously moved jobs and ended up in Croydon quite soon afterwards. She either worked for or worked near John WINTERBOTTOM, an asylum attendant at Cane Hill Asylum in Purley. John was married to Julia Violet Phillips (Croydon Register Office 1 Nov 1898), and they had a son John Lemuel (named for his grandfather, Lemuel Winterbottom, a gas stoker). John Lemuel was born in Deptford KEN, and in the 1901 census he can be found living in Deptford with his Phillips grandparents. I don't know whether the marriage broke down around 1900, or whether Julia died (I haven't found a death record for her) but John Lemuel next fetches up in 1911 in Nottingham, living with his adopted parents Walter and Ada Garrad in Nottingham; and there was a younger sister, Ivy Mary. When I found Ivy's birth certificate, I found her full name was Ivy Mary Winterbottom Ottaway, and she was the illegitimate daughter of Ada, born in Nottingham in 1903. My cousin had thought Ada was married to Mr Winterbottom, but I found no such marriage, and when she married Mr Garrad she did so as Ottaway. I have written more about the Winterbottom connection here.
