This section examines the families of RAMPTON living in the area covered by the modern-day Registration District of Kingsclere. The parishes in this section of the One-Name Study are:

The area is bordered on the North by Berkshire, on the East by Basingstoke, on the West by Andover and Whitchurch, and on the South by Winchester.

The church of St James serves the parish of Ashmansworth. Unfortunately, early registers were destroyed by fire in 1810, and so records only exist from 1811 onwards. I have found no parish register records for Ashmansworth Ramptons, although a few were to be found living there in 1851. For instance, Mary Rampton, born circa 1831 in Crux Easton, was a maid servant in Ashmansworth; and Charles & Maria Rampton together with their daughter Hannah.

The church of St Stephen serves the parish of Baughurst. Parish Registers exist from 1678. Baughurst's proximity to Tadley means that most of the Baughurst Ramptons can trace their roots back to Tadley and Monk Sherborne. The first sighting is in 1683, when William WRAMPTON married Margaret BUNNY, but then there is a 130 year gap until the marriage of Thomas RAMPTON and Harriet ROLF on 21 Apr 1823. Thomas was a member of the Tadley family.

The church of All Saints serves the parish of Burghclere. Parish Registers exist from 1559. Only one Rampton marriage appears to have taken place in Burghclere, that of Joane RAMPTON to Edward ALIE on 18 Oct 1668 - noted in Phillimore's. There is one MI also, for Esther RAMPTON, born Sept 14 1886 died Nov 26 1897. This was almost certainly the daughter of Henry Charles Rampton and his wife Esther Rosa (nee HOOKER) of the Whitchurch family - they were certainly living in Burghclere in about 1896 as their son Ernest was born there. This parish requires further investigation.

The church of St Michael and All Angels serves the parish of Crux Easton. Parish Registers exist from 1737. The first Rampton event in Crux Easton was the marriage of William Rampton to Anne Russell in 1816. William was a member of the Whitchurch family. I have traced all subsequent Crux Easton Rampton events to members of this family, and so all the people concerned are covered in the Whitchurch section. See the Whitchurch Family Chart.

The church of St Martin serves the parish of East Woodhay. Parish Registers exist from 1610. I have not identified any Rampton events in this parish.

The church of St Lawrence serves the parish of Ecchinswell. Parish Registers exist from 1610. I have not identified any Rampton events in this parish.

The church of St Mary serves the parish of Ewhurst. Parish Registers exist from 1684. I have not identified any Rampton events in this parish.

The church of All Saints serves the parish of Hannington. Parish Registers exist from 1768. The first Rampton event in Hannington took place in 1837 and was the marriage between Peter HUSE and Elizabeth RAMPTON. The next was the marriage of her illegitimate daughter Patience to Henry COWDRY in 1852. Elizabeth Hughes (nee Rampton) was buried there in 1893, even though she had moved to Martyr Worthy before her death; and there were four Rampton marriages in the early part of the 20th Century at Hannington.

The church of St Michael and All Angels serves the parish of Highclere. Parish Registers exist from 1655. I have not identified any Rampton events in this parish.

The church of St Mary serves the parish of Kingsclere. Parish Registers exist from 1538. The earliest Rampton event I have located is the baptism of Sarah in 1704, daughter of William and Jane. Only one other child was born to this couple. The HGS Burial Index shows the burial of William in 1741, but nothing for Jane, although there is a burial for a Joan in 1724. No ages are given for these burials, and so it is impossible to confirm the exact identities. However, the appearance of Joan is interesting because this was a fairly unusual name for a Rampton. There is another Joan, of roughly the right period, of whom I have lost sight - Joan BRADBOURN married to William RAMPTON on 8 Jun 1693 at Whitchurch. This couple baptised only one child in Whitchurch, William, in 1694 and then no more was hear of them there. Could then have moved around before settling in Kingsclere ten years later? Was the Jane given in the Kingsclere registers a mistranscription for Joan? More investigation is required.

After this, there is a long gap in my records, until 1843, and the baptism of Jane, illegitimate daughter of Diana Rampton. I have not been able to determine that there was a significant indigenous Rampton population in Kingsclere. They mostly passed through, or settled there for a number of years, like Wyndham Rampton and his large family, and then moved on.

The church of St James the Less serves the parish of Litchfield. Parish Registers exist from 1624. I have not identified any Rampton events in this parish.

The church of St Mary the Virgin serves the parish of Sydmonton. Parish Registers exist from 1854, marriages only. I have not identified any Rampton events in this parish.

The church of St Peter serves the parish of Tadley. Parish Registers exist from 1683. A modern church, St Paul, has also served Tadley since 1966. Non-Conformism has been very strong in Tadley for more than two centuries, and many of the Tadley Ramptons became Methodists and Baptists. Records for these are less easy to find, but the burial ground attached to the Old Meeting House has yielded a number of interesting Monumental Inscriptions.

Since Tadley has the largest concentration of Ramptons in the Kingsclere area, it is the subject of a separate section. A box chart for the Tadley families is also available.

The church of St Katherine serves the parish of Wolverton. Parish Registers exist from 1717. Rampton events are infrequent, but do occur, the earliest being the marriage of Mary Rampton to Richard MOTT in 1720. However, Mary stated that she was of West Sherborne, thereby placing her in the Monk Sherborne family. In fact she is most likely the Mary born to Edward Rampton and Elizabeth (nee Wild) baptised in 1701 at Monk Sherborne.

The church of St James serves the parish of Woodcott. Parish Registers exist from 1579. I have not identified any Rampton events in this parish.
