Who They Were

William Herbert Butler William joined the Army as a regular soldier on 23 Aug 1911, adding two years to his age to qualify. He served with the Royal Berkshire Regiment from the start of World War I, in Flanders and Northern France. He was with the force which occupied Germany after the Armistice. Once demobbed, he returned to civilian life, but was later called up to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment to deal with riots in the early 1920s. He was later employed as a Post Office Engineer, erecting telegraph poles, and after retirement he turned his hobby, gardening, into a third career, and became a jobbing gardener. [Notes | William's War Diary]
William married Lucy Ellen OTTAWAY daughter of William Frederick OTTAWAY and Mary Ann HARRISON, on 13 Jul 1921 in Egham Surrey. Lucy had been orphaned at the tender age of 11, her father having died when she was seven and her mother four years later in 1904. Whilst living with her married sister in Nottingham, after her Mother died, she was employed as a cigarette worker at the Player's cigarette factory. On her return to Surrey, Lucy was employed as a laundry worker before her marriage, and as a cook whilst her children were growing up. [Notes]
